What is Presidents’ Day?

Presidents’ Day marks the celebration of the birthdays of two of the United States most iconic and beloved presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. While Presidents’ Day is often celebrated with parades, presentations, and other festivities, it is also an opportunity to reflect on their impact on the nation and what they have left behind for future generations to come.

George Washington is remembered as the first president of the United States and for leading the country through its Revolutionary War

, making the infant nation a beacon of democracy and independence in the world. His leadership was demonstrated during the war by his determination to drive the British from occupied territory and his boldness in creating a government which ensured civil liberties and a representative democracy for the citizens of the United States.

Abraham Lincoln, the man who saved the Union, was elected president in 1860 and led the nation through the U.S. Civil War. He was praised for his prowess in uniting the nation after divisive political alignment and for his tenacity in pushing forward the policy of emancipation, which would eventually liberate the slaves that had been held in captivity throughout the United States. Lincoln also used his presidency to level the playing field between unions and businesses, ensuring that workers were given fair wages and reasonable workplace conditions.

Today, we celebrate these two influential presidents by sharing stories of their lives and legacies, and discussing their accomplishments and virtues.
